The integrity crisis
The reason why so many great builders end up creating things they don't actually believe in

When you lead from your convictions, people around you respond with reciprocity. There's a gravitational pull to your certainty. You make decisions without doubt, hesitation, or a sense of betraying yourself. You might sometimes be wrong, but you're wrong for the right reasons, grounded in something immutable rather than expedient. This foundation creates confidence in you and sense of reliability in others. You're excited, focused, and sure of your path.
But then, after months of grinding, reality starts intruding your thinking.
Your mind fragments into two systems that run simultaneously: one preserving your vision and ideals, another operating the day to day. You don't notice it happening at first. One decision here, a small pivot there. Each one makes perfect sense in isolation. You're just being "responsive" to the market, meeting client needs, solving technical dependencies. But something feels off.
"When we reduce company leadership to its operational essence, we negate another very important component: vision," said Bill Campbell, an important figure behind much of Silicon Valley’s early ethos and coach to founders like Steve Jobs and Eric Schmidt. "Though they may run the company better, they lose the heart and soul of the company, the vision that is going to take it forward." When your operational mind outweighs your vision-preserving one, it creates an internal dissonance.
The work that once energized you now feels frustrating and overwhelming. You catch yourself describing your project in terms of what the community wants to hear rather than what inspired you to build it.
The gap between your original vision and your daily work grows wider each week. As your dreams blur into nightmares, you find yourself in The Integrity Crisis. It's the hidden reason why so many great builders end up creating things they don't actually believe in.
Contagion, coping, and normalization
The integrity crisis happens as a series of incremental compromises. You make exceptions and take temporary measures that become permanent and rationalize them as strategic or justify them quoting others.
Your team calibrates their own boundaries to match your decisions. Your compromises become embedded in company communications that translate in your company's operations. Early contributors call out the inconsistencies but new hires normalize the new standard.
At this point, your original vision feels like an accusation, and when someone quotes your values back to you, you think they sound naive.
But you're not alone.
We're experiencing an industry-wide integrity crisis. The principles by which Bitcoin stands have been progressively eroding. Polynya, a pseudonymous account that gained rapid traction for their critiques to the industry, calls it "Crypto's broken moral compass."
Polynya condemns how blind we are to the scale of the problem. We cope, laugh off responsibility, become defensive and hide behind cynicism as a shield against taking values seriously:
There's those who think it's fine: "people can do as they please"
There's those who use reductive arguments: "Everything's a ponzi" or "There'll always be demand for casinos"
There's those who compartmentalize: "I'll just focus on the good and ignore the very very bad"
There's those who stay silent due to fear: "too afraid to speak up because they don't want to be silenced by the degenerate mob, or they don't want to FUD their bags."
This blindness isn't accidental, it's how we adapt to function in a system increasingly at odds with our original values. Compromises find validation in others. The integrity crisis is a self-reinforcing loop.
This pattern repeats across individuals, teams, and entire industries. This is why revolutionary organizations gradually become the institutions they sought to disrupt. It's why movements built on passion morph into mechanisms of control.
But your discomfort is not a reflection of a broken system. It’s your conviction being tested against your changing context. The fact that you still care despite all the compromises, the rationalizations, the frustrations, that’s your integrity trying to resurface.
That's why the integrity crisis is a threshold.
The threshold, a renaissance
The erosion of rigid convictions break things but it also breaks them open.
The threshold is a passage. A necessary bridge. A renaissance where your conviction crystallizes into something more honest, more resilient.
But not everyone crosses it.
Most people, when confronted with this crisis, follow the Trough of Disillusionment. They believe that the friction between old ideals and new realities is a proof that integrity was never real to begin with. They see the problems, but they believe there's no alternative. This narrative is bitter but comforting and it becomes believable. So they settle. They plateau. They lower their standards, building increasingly elaborate justifications on increasingly compromised ground.
You’ve probably heard this voice too, the one that says the system is broken, the dream was naïve, and your only option is to adapt by cutting away the parts of you that you cared the most.
But as Polynya writes at the beginning of the post, "there's good in crypto."
Despite everything that has gone wrong in crypto, it didn’t kill the industry. We made space for wider adoption, softened regulatory resistance, and even earned a seat in political campaigns. It also made what matters most more relevant and carried forward by technologies and projects built on original ideals, but with more resilient architectures.
“All of her struggles are to reconcile the many levels which play upon her.” wrote Robert A. Johnson, a Jungian analyst and author of mythological psychology classics. In his book _She_, he described the myth of Psyche as the challenge of living across "levels", were she's thrown "between earth and heaven, mortality and immortality, humanness and godliness." For Psyche, these seemingly contradictory realities were the gateway to a new "level" of consciousness, clarity, resilience.
Psyche's myth is your myth. Being forced to adapt pushed you to reconsider ideas that you would have rejected, engage with people you would have ignored, and try things you would have otherwise dismissed. Some of your compromises were actually openings. New conversations. New questions. A new dimension.
Integrity isn’t just about holding onto your principles, it’s about upholding them through action. And action doesn’t happen in a vacuum but in a changing, often resistant reality.
This means integrity isn’t static but a living practice.
When you recognize this, it's no longer a fixed trait that you possess or lose into a discipline. Integrity becomes a continuous conversation between honesty and execution. It becomes the process of outgrowing yourself if you deliberately cross the threshold.
Thus, the integrity crisis isn't an end, but a beginning. A bridge into the next level of your leadership, your vision, and ultimately yourself.
Leading with integrity

You realize you've been leading from cope, trade-offs, and constraints.
You've been making decisions based on what you think is still possible, what fits the model you've already built, what won't disappoint too many people or cost too much momentum. Reality around you changed and you're stuck. Not because you've changed, but because you don't know how to change without losing yourself.
To lead with integrity, you need to break this loop.
Not backwards, but inward, from first principles. But how can your actions uphold your principles if those principles themselves have become blurry, hidden?
Not every old belief was wrong. Some just belong to an earlier version of you, shaped by a different context, fewer complexities, and less experience. But if you don’t bring those assumptions to the surface, they'll continue shaping your decisions from the background.
In his Biblical Series, Dr. Jordan Peterson psychologist, author and public figure, describes God’s act of naming in Genesis as a symbolic gesture. One that speaks to how we bring order to chaos through language. Your principles exist before they're named but it’s in naming them and explicitly categorizing what's good and what's bad, that you make them real. Naming is what brings them forth into your consciousness, allowing you to embody them through words and actions.
To lead with integrity, you must deliberately name and confront two realities: your old convictions and the reality in which they made sense, and your current reality with the principles you now uphold.
This is the most uncomfortable work. Recognizing your new convictions. Removing ambiguity. And yet, it's the courage to expose your assumptions, challenge your own beliefs and aligning yourself with what’s honest with you now that transforms integrity from an aspiration into something actionable.
Most people treat integrity like a one-time decision. They reflect but they don't act. Because acting means risk. And risk feels dangerous. However, the path doesn’t get clearer by thinking. It gets clearer by moving. It isn’t a decision. It’s a discipline.
You don't have the full path mapped out, and even if you did, you know it would change. You've taken the next honest step, even if you’re unsure where it leads.
You’ve crossed the threshold.
Most people didn't. But you did. Most people don't care at the level that you do. But not caring hurt. And caring, really caring, turns out to be the lighter load. You stopped waiting for the world to match your depth, and started honoring it yourself. And that, strangely, feels liberating.
When you lead with integrity, the world around you ceases to shift away and reorganizes quietly, powerfully. There's a gravitational pull to your certainty. You make decisions without doubt, hesitation, or a sense of betraying yourself. You might sometimes be wrong, but you're wrong for the right reasons, grounded in something immutable rather than expedient. This foundation creates confidence in you and sense of reliability in others. You're excited, focused, and sure of your path.
